Mushur dal or Mushurir Dal is ubiquitous in every Bengali household.
Mushur Dal aka Masoor dal (dhuli) in Hindi, Pink lentils in English, is all Bengali favorite 😉 and cooked in many ways.
Presenting here is the thin, watery kind with flavors of garlic, onion and tomatoes.
We prefer our lentils little over cooked and watery. I do not need to recount the benefits of lentils. Simply put, it is protein packed.
Here’s what I did………..
INGREDIENTS
Makes for 2 -3 persons
1/2 cup – pink lentils / dhuli masoor
1 nos – chopped green chili
1 tbsp – finely chopped onion
1 pod – finely chopped garlic
1 nos – finely chopped tomato
1/2 tsp – tumeric powder
1 tsp – oil
2 1/2 cup – water
pinch of cumin seeds
salt to taste
METHOD
Pressure cook the lentil with 2 1/2 cup water and salt to 3 whistles or 20 mins.
Heat oil in a pan and temper with the cumin seeds. As they splutter, add the garlic and fry till golden. Tip in the chopped onion and green chili and fry till onion go translucent. Add the chopped tomato and tumeric powder.
Once the tomato softens, pour in the boiled lentils. Adjust salt and let it boil for 5 -6 mins on medium flame.
Serve hot with rice.
